Hofstra University began the 2021 academic year by welcoming our ninth president, Dr. Susan Poser, who made bringing students back to campus and experiencing a full, rich college experience her first order of business. Hofstra’s partnership with Northwell Health and universal vaccination and masking policies have allowed the campus to be fully open and lively this academic year. Hofstra University offers top-ranked programs with international reach and reputation, internships in New York City with leading companies in every field, and the opportunity to work alongside award-winning faculty and mentors in cutting-edge labs and facilities — all this on a campus with a traditional college atmosphere that feels like home. Hofstra students produce award-winning films, television shows, and radio programs in studios equipped with technology used by industry professionals. The University has students who have conducted original behavioral research and utilized it to consult for a global entertainment brand on marketing strategy. Students incubate ideas at the business school and then start small businesses, with the help of Hofstra alumni-turned-entrepreneurs. Health Professions Nursing and health professions are among the fastest-growing careers, with a need for 12.9 million more health workers by 2035, according to the World Health Organization. Recently, the Hofstra Northwell School of Nursing and Physician Assistant Studies launched an undergraduate nursing program to help fill that need. In collaboration with Northwell Health, the largest healthcare system in New York state, Hofstra nursing students have opportunities for clinical experiences at 23 hospitals and more than 830 outpatient facilities. Engineering and Technology The undergraduate engineering programs in the Fred DeMatteis School of Engineering and Applied Science are ranked #39 among nondoctoral engineering programs in the nation by U.S. News & World Report (2021 edition), and the school’s sophisticated equipment and labs (big data, cell and tissue engineering, robotics, and advanced manufacturing) are available to students starting in their first year. The newest addition to Hofstra’s advanced engineering labs is the Cybersecurity Innovation and Research Center, which combines the expertise of Hofstra’s engineering, computer science, and business programs in one of the most technologically advanced facilities of its kind in the region. More than 200 corporate partners participate in the school’s co-op program, which provides engineering and computer science students with full-time, paid work experience at top companies before graduation, and often leads to permanent job offers. Business Leo A. Guthart Hall for Innovation and Discovery — home to the Frank G. Zarb School of Business — was built to promote collaboration, entrepreneurship, and research opportunities. In the Behavioral Research in Business Laboratory, students conduct research for some of the world’s largest, best-known companies. In the Institute of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, students get help turning their ideas into viable companies and create prototypes of their products in a high-tech makerspace. Students also get hands-on experience at internships with global corporations in New York City, and through the Frank G. Zarb School of Business’ alliance with IBM Global University. Public Policy and Public Service As the only university ever to host three consecutive U.S. presidential debates (2008, 2012, 2016), Hofstra is committed to civic engagement and community service. At the Peter S. Kalikow School of Government, Public Policy and International Affairs, students can combine their interest in policy, public service, and the political process with courses and degrees in a variety of disciplines, from political science and history to global studies, sociology, and economics. Communication and Arts Hofstra students broadcast play-by-play for a professional sports franchise at WRHU-88.7 FM, Radio Hofstra University, a three-time winner of the National Association of Broadcasters Marconi Award as the nation’s best college radio station. They learn filmmaking and television production in one of Variety magazine’s 2021 “stellar” film programs. At The Lawrence Herbert School of Communication, students learn in state-of-the-art production and post-production facilities, including three studios with 4K ultra-high-definition cameras and a cutting-edge converged newsroom. Professors in communications and the arts are accomplished scholars and working professionals, winning Emmys, Grammys, and other industry honors. Billboard magazine recognized Hofstra’s Music Department and Music Business program as one of its 2020 Best Music Business Schools, and Backstage magazine ranked the Drama program, home to America’s longest-running Shakespeare Festival, with one of the most authentic Globe stages in North America, as one New York’s top acting schools. Plan Your Path In all, Hofstra offers over 165 undergraduate programs and more than 100 dual-degree programs, which allow students to earn undergraduate and graduate degrees in less time and at a lower cost than if each degree were pursued separately. Hofstra ranks among the top 10 percent of universities for entry-level and midcareer salaries (according to Payscale.com), with 93 percent of Hofstra students going to graduate school or securing a job within a year of graduation.
