Bowie State University is Maryland’s first Historically Black College or University. Founded in 1865, just months after the end of the Civil War, the University began with a powerful mission: to educate those who had long been denied access to higher education. More than 150 years later, that founding purpose of expanding opportunity through education continues to shape how Bowie State prepares students and builds community.
