Le Moyne Students Equipped to Make a Difference

Le Moyne College - College Fair Guide

As one of only 28 Jesuit colleges and universities in the United States, Le Moyne provides a values-based education that helps students explore their potential through academics, experience and service. A Le Moyne education equips students with the intellectual skills necessary to succeed in the world and the will to use their abilities to promote a more just society. The nearly 500-year-old Jesuit tradition upon which the College was founded is alive and well today.

Located in a suburban setting on a picturesque 160-acre campus in Syracuse, N.Y., Le Moyne draws students who are high achievers, with an average high school grade point average of 90 percent. In recent years, the College has opened the new home to the Madden School of Business, with a modern trading floor and financial education center; a state-of-the-art, 48,000-square-foot addition to its existing science complex; a newly refurbished library with a Quantitative Reasoning Center and Writing Center, a new plaza with a bookstore, café and pizzeria; a campus pub; and the Dolphin Den, featuring a food court and a convenience store, that has quickly become a popular place for students to meet. The College’s LaCasse Dining Center underwent an extensive and award-winning $3-million renovation. Also new to campus is a multi-use turf field, which is home to four of the College’s 21 NCAA teams.

The Curriculum

Le Moyne continues to bolster programs that provide undergraduates with opportunities to expand their studies well beyond the traditional confines of a liberal arts education. In recognition of those efforts, the College has earned accolades from The Princeton Review, U.S. News & World Report, Forbes, and Kiplinger’s Personal Finance, all of which have lauded Le Moyne for its academic excellence and value.

Buoyed by top-flight faculty, the College offers Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degrees in more than 30 majors in innovative fields such as environmental science systems, theatre arts, and peace and global studies. Recently, Le Moyne launched the new College of Arts and Sciences, with 118 full-time faculty members, 36 majors and minors, 12 programs, and five centers of excellence. Le Moyne is also home to the Madden School of Business which includes three centers of excellence in entrepreneurship, innovation and creativity; global business; and reflective leadership and ethical business practices, and the Purcell School of Professional Studies. The McDevitt Center at Le Moyne serves as a transformational model for enhancing and integrating research, learning and service.

The educational benefits afforded to Le Moyne’s 2,400 undergraduate and 700 graduate students include small classes, with a student-to-faculty ratio of 13:1, a supportive and close-knit campus community, and the opportunity to work closely with dedicated, experienced instructors.

Whatever course of study they choose to pursue, Le Moyne students build upon an excellent foundation in English, history, philosophy and more, provided by the College’s core curriculum. The core allows students to expand their worldview as they explore a variety of disciplines. Throughout the curriculum, students are encouraged to ask questions, balance competing viewpoints, and engage in lively and respectful debate.

Experiential Learning

At Le Moyne, students reinforce what they learn in the classroom by doing, and therefore have a much deeper appreciation and understanding of the theories and concepts they have been taught. Le Moyne students work outside of the classroom to take part in research around the country and the world. Through the College’s Center for the Study of Environmental Change, students have joined faculty members on trips to Costa Rica, Iceland and the big island of Hawaii to investigate the effects of global climate change on sensitive ecosystems and environments.

And in today’s interconnected, global society, students who participate in Le Moyne’s study-abroad program gain a critical advantage as they prepare for life after college. Le Moyne’s study-abroad experiences include yearlong, semester and short-term programs in places as varied as the Czech Republic, Ireland and Spain.

Service is also a critical component of a Le Moyne education, and students regularly volunteer their time to help others, both locally and abroad. Through activities such as tutoring children at a local after-school program, working at a soup kitchen in Philadelphia and volunteering at an orphanage in Kenya, they are deeply involved in the world around them.

The staff in the College’s Office of Career Advising and Development works closely with students to help them secure internships that provide them with valuable professional experiences and connections. Among the places where Le Moyne students have recently worked as interns are ESPN, Bristol-Meyers Squibb, Lockheed Martin, ABC’s The View and PricewaterhouseCoopers

The totality of their experiences at Le Moyne ensures that students graduate equipped to make a difference in their communities, personally and professionally. A recent survey found that 98 percent of recent alumni were employed or had been admitted to graduate school within a year of graduation.
