As actor and filmmaker Tom Hanks wrote in his New York Times op-ed piece a few years ago, I Owe It All to Community College: “I drove past the campus (Chabot Community College) a few years ago with one of my kids and summed up my two years there this way: ‘That place made me what I am today.”’
That’s what community colleges do. They make students into nurses and respiratory therapists, into graphic designers and computer programmers, into entrepreneurs, and even into professional athletes. They give people second chances. Chances at whatever stage in life they’re at. High school graduates, high school drop outs, home schooled students, single mothers, adults in the workplace looking for a change in their careers, just to name a few.
At SUNY Sullivan, named a Top 10 community college in New York State by both BestColleges.com and by EDsmart.org, they’re working to make it easier for students to earn their degrees. By creating more one-year certificate programs. By removing several barriers for students looking to transfer in as a student. By expanding class scheduling to provide more options for students who work. And, by launching this fall, a number of degree programs that can be taken 100 percent online, so students — and especially working professionals — can study whenever, and wherever, it’s convenient for them.

Academic Programs
SUNY Sullivan offers 40 degree programs and five certificates in liberal arts as well as those with a career and technical focus. Students can choose from degrees and certificates in Accounting, Business and Computers, to Humanities, History and Liberal Arts & Sciences, to the Health Sciences including Medical Assisting, Nursing and Respiratory Care. SUNY Sullivan supports the phenomenal growth in tourism happening throughout the mid-Hudson Region, with its Catskill Hospitality Institute preparing you for careers in Hospitality Management and Tourism as well as in Culinary Arts, Pastry Arts and Professional Chef. The College also offers programs in Sports, Fitness and Wellness, and offers an academically rigorous Honors Program.
100 Percent Online Programs
SUNY Sullivan offers 11 two-year degree and one-year certificate programs that you can complete 100 percent online. They include: Accounting Studies Certificate, Administrative Assistant AAS, Business Administration AAS, Business Administration AS, Business Administration: Marketing AAS, Business: Accounting AAS, Green Building Maintenance & Management AAS, Liberal Arts and Sciences AA, Liberal Arts and Sciences: History AA, Liberal Arts and Sciences: Humanities AA, and Virtual Office Certificate.
There are also four programs offered as hybrids, with 50 percent of coursework online: Computer Programming AAS, Hospitality and Tourism Management AAS, Liberal Arts and Sciences: English AA, and Liberal Arts and Sciences: Psychology AS.
Sustainable Sullivan
Sustainability is at the heart of what they do at SUNY Sullivan. Their commitment to environmental and social responsibility informs everything from campus operations to curriculum. SUNY Sullivan has been incorporating sustainable practices into its campus operations for many years, including a geothermal system to heat and cool its buildings and, more recently, installation of a 3 kW photovoltaic array and 2.5 kW wind turbine for hands-on renewable energy training. A nine acre, 2.15 MW (7056 PV module) solar farm is also housed on campus. SUNY Sullivan students collect and compost over 3,000 pounds of food scraps each year using an on-campus forced air compost area. Students also have the opportunity to work on the Hope Farm, a multi-acre organic farm, in the greenhouse, and at the apiary.
Living on Campus
While many SUNY Sullivan students commute to campus, others prefer to live in one of two on campus options: the Lazarus I. Levine Residence Hall, which is a 320-bed collegiate-style residence, or the EcoGreen Townhouses, each accommodating 16 students and including a full kitchen.
Athletics
SUNY Sullivan fields 12 intercollegiate teams within the NJCAA Division II and III in Region XV. The Men’s Generals Basketball Team has won the national championship a record four times, in 1992, 1995, 1996 and 2007! The College recently moved to Division II athletics in Men’s and Women’s Basketball, as well as in Baseball, which allows the College to provide athletic scholarships to qualified students, and to offer both Varsity and JV teams in those sports. The College also participates in Division III athletics in Men’s Wrestling, Women’s Volleyball, Men’s and Women’s Cross Country and Outdoor Track, Men’s and Women’s Golf, and co-ed Cheerleading.
