What Matters Most When Choosing a College?

With so many colleges to choose from, it’s important to look for a community of active learners — a place where academic exploration is paired with real-world experience. A college that encourages you to think deeply and act boldly. Here are five traits to look for as you consider where you’ll thrive, and how Lycoming College brings them to life.

1. Future-Focused Academics

Careers and industries continue to evolve, making adaptability, creativity, and strong foundational skills more important than ever. Lycoming prepares students for what’s ahead through customized, cross-disciplinary programs and a wide range of major and minor combinations. Students can shape an academic experience around their interests and goals, exploring programs such as biomedical sciences, exercise science, sport management, data science, entrepreneurship, neuroscience, legal studies, environmental science, and more.

2.High-Impact Experiences

Some of the most valuable learning happens beyond the classroom. Lycoming’s Center for Enhanced Academic Experiences connects students with internships, research, and global study opportunities locally, nationally, and internationally through partnerships with faculty, alumni, and organizations.

With individualized guidance from a career advisor in their academic area, students have studied reliable drinking water and sustainable coffee farming in the Dominican Republic; translated poetry with faculty; interned at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History; explored the history of mathematics in Italy and Greece; and participated in Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs).

The Center also provides subject-specific career advising, professional skills workshops, and graduate school application guidance.

As a result, Lycoming students engage in career preparation at significantly higher rates than other college seniors.

3. Resources That Matter

A college’s endowment, relative to its student population, offers insight into the resources available to support student learning. Lycoming’s endowment ranks among the highest per student in the country, enabling the College to award more than $36M in financial aid annually, invite world-renowned scholars to campus, and invest in premier facilities and technology.

In recent years, Lycoming has added a new music building, science center, planetarium, biochemistry suite, 120-acre biology field station, gateway center, and renovated academic center — all part of a commitment to providing advanced learning opportunities for every student.

4. Extraordinary Outcomes

When considering the return on a college investment, graduate outcomes matter — both long-term and short-term. Lycoming’s more than 16,000 alumni have found success across all industries, including Fortune 500 companies, public service at the local, national, and international levels, and fields such as medicine, law, education, and the arts.

But that success doesn’t take years to begin. In fact, 95 percent of the Class of 2025 was employed or enrolled in graduate school within 6-12 months of graduation.

Thanks to built-in opportunities for research and hands-on learning from day one, Lycoming students are highly successful in gaining admission to graduate, law, and medical schools, often with scholarships. Lycoming students and alumni are also frequent recipients of prestigious awards, including Fulbright and Goldwater scholarships.

Most notably, Lycoming was recently ranked #5 for Social Mobility among U.S. News & World Report’s 2026 National Liberal Arts Colleges list, which measures two factors assessing the graduation rates of Pell-awarded students.

5. An Active, Supportive Community

While academics, learning opportunities, facilities, and outcomes are all important, campus culture plays a critical role in the college experience. As a solely undergraduate institution serving just 1200 students, Lycoming College offers a truly individualized and engaged community. With a 10:1 student-to-faculty ratio, professors are more than scholars — they become mentors who regularly collaborate with students on research and creative work.

Campus life is enriched through more than 60 student-run clubs and organizations, 20 NCAA Division III athletic teams, an Outdoor Leadership & Education program, opportunities for service, and affinity housing communities that help students build lasting connections.
