Shawnee State University is Preparing Students to Succeed in Tomorrow’s World

Shawnee State University - College Fair Guide

“Preparing today’s students to succeed in tomorrow’s world” is more than a catchy phrase for the faculty and staff at Shawnee State University (SSU). It defines their mission, or purpose. It serves as a promise to students that no matter where they are on their education path – Shawnee State University provides them the opportunity to reach their goals.

Dream Big

Students are encouraged to explore new worlds, ideas and ways of thinking at Shawnee State. With a student-to-teacher ratio of 18:1, every student receives personalized attention and a supportive environment aimed at helping them reach their goals.

This personal attention is matched by SSU’s commitment to academic excellence. Standout programs, like its nationally-ranked Game Design and Development programs, provide students with a competitive advantage. While all 80 of its fields of study prepare students for success, Shawnee State’s gaming, pre-med, plastics engineering technology, teacher education, and health sciences programs — including occupational therapy and nursing — are regionally recognized for excellence.

Seize Opportunities

SSU believes that every student with a vision, a plan and the right opportunities can do big things. The faculty help students push the boundaries to give every individual the best chance at success.

Shawnee State is open access. That means every student is given the chance to earn a college degree. Through its Summer Bridge to Success program, students can complete any required developmental coursework and begin the fall semester college-ready and debt-free. Being open access also means that SSU is committed to making college affordable. Tuition at SSU is among the lowest in the state of Ohio.

Join a Diverse Community

Shawnee State welcomes all points of view in its diverse community. Students have the choice of more than 50 student clubs and organizations that range in focus from academic areas to groups of students who love to barbeque. Finding a club that fits students’ interests, religious and political affiliations, majors, causes and passions, is as easy as clicking a button — which they can do through SSU’s mobile app.

Community engagement is important to students at Shawnee State, not only engagement on campus but in the larger Portsmouth, Ohio, region. Campus-wide events like SSU Gives Back and MLK Day of Service, provide opportunities for students to volunteer to help make Shawnee State and Portsmouth an even better place to work, live and discover.

Visit SSU’s Campus

Campus visits, including housing tours, are available Monday through Friday at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. through the SSU Office of Admissions. Saturday visits are available by appointment. Special visit days, like Shawnee Showcase Day, Pre-Med Day, Health Sciences Day, and Plastics Day, are promoted throughout the year.

Take the Next Step

Small classes, amazing value, a campus that feels like home — there are countless reasons students choose Shawnee State. The most important reasons, according to faculty, are those that make a difference for each student.
