Preparing students for success starts with programs that evolve to meet the ever-changing professional world. For fall 2020, the College is adding three new majors that will present students with excellent career opportunities in fields that continue to grow.
Data Science and Business Data Analytics
Students in the data science major will develop skills from the fields of computer science, applied math and statistics to extract insights from data and develop processes and models to analyze data. Business data analytics students will develop skills in business and statistics to make data-driven decisions, with an emphasis on identifying trends and creating clear and informative visual presentation of data.
The data science major will be part of the Interdisciplinary Science Department in the Herbert W. Boyer School of Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Computing while business data analytics will be within the Business Department in the Alex G. McKenna School of Business, Economics and Government.
Though housed under two different schools at Saint Vincent, the two new programs will be interdisciplinary in nature, with a number of overlapping courses in data science and analytics. Students can also bridge a variety of disciplines, including mathematics, statistics, computer science, economics, bioinformatics and public health, while several courses will require projects in which students from both majors work together utilizing their strengths from their previous classwork.
While data analysts and data scientists share many similarities, there are differences between the two careers. Data analysts examine large data sets to identify trends, develop charts and create visual presentations to help businesses make strategic decisions. Data scientists design and construct new processes for data modeling and production using prototypes, algorithms, predictive models and custom analysis.
Music Education
In addition to an already robust selection of majors, minors and certificate programs, Saint Vincent College will offer a music education certification beginning in the fall. According to CareerExplorer.com, music education is expected to grow nationwide over the next six years, meaning there will be an increased demand for music teachers who have contemporary training in modern music education.
Moreover, the innovative design of this new program will provide a foundation that prepares music educators to be flexible and willing to embrace new ideas to reach the next generation of passionate musicians. Students in this program, housed in the school of Arts, Humanities and Social Science, will be certified to teach music throughout the PK-12 curriculum, as well as specific areas including musical, choir, band and other specialties.
