Colleges are Eager to Meet High School Students

With high school students returning to classrooms, staying virtual - or both, college admissions offices are anxious to connect with sophomores, juniors and seniors who are looking toward postsecondary education.

College admissions staff are working hard to make their schools accessible to future candidates. Colleges want students to contact them now.

While students have adapted to learning online via video conferencing, they should continue to prepare for what happens after graduation. In addition to watching their instructors and perhaps speaking with teachers online, students should also take this opportunity to reach out to their college counselors. Like teachers, guidance office personnel are working remotely to make sure students have the tools they need to search for the right college.

Whether a student is thinking about a community college vs. a four-year college, public vs. private, in-state vs. out-of state, a career in the military, a gap year, or  getting a job after high school, now is the time to start preparing for the future.

A Virtual Reality

A majority of in person visits and open house events have been cancelled, but many colleges provide a virtual tour of their campus. Most schools also offer an opportunity for students to have an online chat with an admissions officer. Colleges will also strongly encourage you to join them for a virtual event or speak with a representative via phone or email. Admissions offices may even allow you to set up a time for an official interview.

Military Options

Many recruiting stations have been closed for personal visits, but are still available to discuss your future in the military. You may ask a recruiter about education programs such as R.O.T.C., the military academies, the Post 9/11-GI Bill and Yellow Ribbon Program. Serving in the military is not only an honor but can be a great way to finance your education.
