  • Single Parents Succeed at Wilson College

Did you know that more than one in five college students are parents? And of those, almost 55 percent are single parents! Getting to class on time, studying for tests, completing group projects, and working on a paper can be challenging for many students. Imagine doing all that plus feeding your daughter, getting her ready for school before your language lab, then doing her homework with her when she gets home? The good news is that more and more colleges recognize the needs of these student parents and are putting in place the resources and support to help parents balance their family and academic lives. Wilson College in Chambersburg, Pa., was one of the first colleges in the country to offer family housing and support to single parents and their children. In 1996 the College created its Single Parent Scholar (SPS) program. In the over two decades since then, the College has learned what single parents need to succeed and is sharing its experiences with colleges across the country. From the beginning, Wilson’s SPS program provided comfortable on-campus housing and access to daycare for children. But it soon learned that relatively simple additions could make a big difference to student parents. Access to laundry facilities in the residence building, allowing children to eat in the dining hall, and creating safe spaces and playgrounds for the children help families succeed on campus. Also, it is important to create a supportive environment where parents and children can participate in campus life and feel a part of the learning community. Student parents are great mentors for each other, and creating support groups where new parents learn from parents already a year or two into the program is an excellent way to ease the transition into college. Parent mentors can help new families navigate everything from where to shop locally to finding the academic resources they need. They can even help them make friends within the community. As other colleges offer services to single parents and their children, they can learn from the success Wilson College’s Single Parent Scholar Program (SPS) has had, serving over 190 student parents and their children to date. Living on Campus Each family gets a two-room suite with a private bathroom Families on each floor share a kitchen, playroom, and computer room Laundry facilities are free Families can remain in their rooms throughout the summer regardless of whether they are taking summer courses Students have a housing waiver for up to 8 semesters Children Up to two children can live with a parent on campus School-age children can attend daycare and before- and after-school programs locally at no cost to their parent Children eat for free in the dining hall during the academic year Student Parents Parents can be of any age but must be enrolled full-time Affordable tuition rates are the same as those for students without children 100 percent of SPS parents receive financial aid

  • Reduce Costs at Youngstown State University

When considering the next steps in your educational journey, should your college choice be based on the price tag? The simple answer should be “no”, but legitimate concerns about student debt represent a major point of consideration for anyone faced with the decision of pursuing higher education, and whether that is a realistic, attainable goal. The next question is, where will you find the best value? With tuition on the rise at many universities, potential students may find themselves facing a difficult choice – pay an exorbitant amount and go into debt to cover the cost of college, or decide on a community college for two years and miss out on freshman and sophomore year at a four-year institution. Concerns about student debt have always represented a major factor for anyone faced with the decision of whether to attend college, but there is an affordable option for quality education – Youngstown State University (YSU). Located in northeast Ohio and only an hour’s drive from Downtown Pittsburgh, Youngstown State has developed strategies to address the rising cost of tuition. Two of those strategies include the Penguin Tuition Promise, and a reduction to out-of-state tuition. YSU’s out-of-state tuition surcharge has been drastically cut to just $360 per academic year. This dramatic savings makes YSU one of the best values for higher education around! With its current in-state tuition at $9,953, YSU’s costs are among the lowest in the region and third lowest among Ohio’s state universities. In addition to the out-of-state tuition reduction, our Penguin Tuition Promise offers a fixed tuition rate that stays unchanged for four consecutive academic years, assuring students and parents a set price, including room and board, for the pursuit of an undergraduate degree. It is designed to make the cost of college both predictable and affordable, encouraging students to complete degree programs within four consecutive academic years. Those are just some of the ways Youngstown State University works diligently to meet the educational and financial expectations of its students and their families. In addition to the Penguin Tuition Promise and reduction to out-of-state tuition, YSU further offers ways to reduce costs and time to degree completion. Taking college-level examination program tests (CLEP) gives you the opportunity to earn college credit for what you already know with qualifying scores. These exams test your knowledge of introductory college-level subjects and save you time and money. Earning college credit in high school. YSU offers and accepts classes taken while in high school AND taken for college credit at the same time. Advanced placement courses taken in high school where students who receive a passing score on an exam earn college credit. Apply for admission to be considered for YSU scholarships upon acceptance if you are a high school senior ( ysu.edu/admissions/apply-to-ysu ). YSU offers merit-based scholarships to incoming freshmen and transfer students that recognizes academic achievements ( ysu.edu/financial-aid-and-scholarships/scholarships ) and encourages completion of the YSU Foundation Scholarship Application ( ysu.edu/ysufapp ). YSU’s Sokolov Honors College also offers tuition and housing scholarships that can be combined and stacked https://ysu.edu/academics/sokolov-honors-college . YSU offers payment plan options that make it easier for students and families to manage tuition & fee payments. The significance of the academic experiences Youngstown State has to offer are second to none. When it comes to assessing the out-of-pocket cost to attend, and the value of a degree earned, the quality of the higher education YSU provides is difficult to outperform. Whether you have financial need or affluence, completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) ( studentaid.ed.gov/fafsa ) is necessary to receive a complete financial aid offer. The Expected Family Contribution, or EFC figure from the FAFSA, is used to determine eligibility for scholarships, grants, work-study, & loans once compared against the cost of attendance. Founded in 1908, YSU offers over 150 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. With nearly 12,000 students, a 14:1 student to faculty ratio is maintained, with an average class size of 21. If you have not applied for the Fall 2022 semester, there is still time. The Youngstown State University Office of Admissions is standing by to answer any questions and help guide you through the enrollment process. • Ursuline College Students Discover Values, Voice, Vision

At Ursuline College in Pepper Pike, students have countless opportunities — inside and outside the classroom — to develop their self-confidence as well as their intellect. Ursuline’s “Values, Voice, Vision” tagline suggests this. But Carlie, Shanell and Emily tell the story even better. They each took advantage of very different opportunities at Ursuline to discern their values, find their voice, and develop a vision for their own future. Carlie Beal: Global Conservationist Carlie Beal is a junior biology major, minoring in mathematics and psychology. Throughout her years at Ursuline, she has taken every opportunity to explore her passions and dedicate herself to the community. She tutors her peers in mathematics and welcomes the newest Arrows as a member of Orientation Team. She has excelled in the classroom and pursued internships at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo and the Greater Cleveland Aquarium. Carlie explains, “With professors that know your name and interests, you are able to explore your career aspirations in a variety of ways. Ursuline truly prepares students for the real world, continuing to challenge and mentor them.” Her most transformative experience yet was an unforgettable summer in Thailand conducting hands-on research. She completed reforestation work with Chiang Mai University, studied marine biology, and worked on coral restoration projects. She also lived at an elephant nature park where she learned about conservation efforts for elephants. Carlie’s study-abroad experience convinced her to pursue graduate studies and a career in marine biology with a focus on conservation. “The small class sizes at Ursuline make learning so wonderful. I could not imagine going anywhere else. Ursuline is an amazing school and I credit my love of science and all my success to Ursuline College.” Shanell Harris: Social Work Student of the Year Shanell Harris, who received the Social Work Student of the Year Award at the 2018 Cuyahoga County Conference on Social Welfare, almost didn’t come to Ursuline. “I was going to Florida; that was my plan,” Shanell said. Encouragement from her mother and from a friend already enrolled at Ursuline led her to reconsider. “I prayed about it, I thought about it and I came for a visit.” She was hooked and hasn’t looked back. Shanell’s nomination by a faculty member described her as “a vibrant, energetic, joyful young woman who is a magnetic leader among her peers… with a passion for advocacy and with an awareness of the core values of the profession.” Her résumé was packed — and she had a full-time job all lined up — even before she graduated. She had volunteered in the Ronald McDonald Family Room for families of children hospitalized at Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital, worked part-time as a mental health case worker in the Child & Adolescent Psychiatric Unit at Rainbow, received Rainbow’s “Volunteer for All Seasons” award, and had a field placement at local social service agency while she was still a student. Harris made such a good impression at the agency that she went to work there full time after graduating and passing her licensing exam. “I do not think I would have gotten the experience I had here at Ursuline College anywhere else,” Shannel says. “I believe Ursuline pushed me to that professional level that I didn’t know I could achieve.” Emily Adkinson: Renaissance Woman Emily Adkinson immersed herself in all things Ursuline. She represented the Arrows as captain for the NCAA Division II volleyball team, was involved in Drama Club, the Programming Board, and Student Nurses of Ursuline College. Off campus, she volunteered for a summer camp for children with cancer and for Robby’s Voice Annual 5k, which provides addiction education and outreach. Even with a full social calendar, Emily remained a dedicated student in the Breen School of Nursing’s honors program. She completed clinical rotations at the Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals, while also conducting independent research as a part of the Annual Student Research Symposium. She even presented her research at a Midwest Nursing Research Society conference while still a student. Emily secured a job before she graduated in 2017 and is now a registered nurse at University Hospitals. She credits Ursuline’s enthusiastic and supportive faculty and staff for helping her succeed. “You decide what you want your college experience to look like and people just support you.” Ursuline’s small sizes and supportive environment make experiences like Carlie’s, Shanell’s and Emily’s possible. The College seeks to educate the whole person in preparing leaders for our local and global communities. To learn more about Ursuline College, visit ursuline.edu/admission.

  • Myth-Busting at Ohio Wesleyan University

Ohio Wesleyan University thinks that much of what you’ve heard about choosing a college is wrong. You probably see these myths and misperceptions all the time in the news and on social media. • College is just about getting a first job. • Your major is the most important decision, and you need to make it now. • The liberal arts don’t give you valuable, real-world skills. • Cheaper is better. Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. And really wrong. Let’s look at each of these myths. Preparation for Life – and Your First Job Ohio Wesleyan’s mission is not only to give students the experience and skills for their first job, but also to help them develop the vital, lifelong skills that will help them grow as the workplace changes, so they can easily move into new jobs and careers And maybe you don’t want to be always working for someone else. The lifelong skills and expertise you get at Ohio Wesleyan are the perfect training if you want to someday start your own businesses and be the boss. In fact, OWU alumni are among the most prolific entrepreneurs in the nation. Don’t Stress Over Your Major Society places way too much pressure on 17- and 18-year-olds to decide on their major and lock themselves into a program. OWU thinks most students should wait. When you join the academic community at OWU, you will explore different areas, get hands-on experience in different settings, and discover your passion. OWU offers more than 70 majors, and about a third of its students combine majors to create a unique program that matches where they want to go — who they want to be. You’ll get plenty of help making those choices at OWU. Skills and Experience that Matter Employers constantly tell us the most important skills they look for are how to ask good questions, how to speak and write persuasively, how to work with diverse groups of people, and how to solve wicked problems. Those are the power skills OWU teaches, no matter the major. And its unique OWU Connection program guarantees that every student backs up those skills with real-world experience. With the OWU Connection, every student will have opportunities to conduct research with faculty mentors, serve in the community on issues they care about, combine learning with travel around the world, and get real experience in internships that matter. The Cost Myth Finally, there’s the myth that private colleges must be more expensive. It just isn’t so. Students and families need to look beyond the sticker price and see the real cost — and the real value. OWU invests more than $50 million a year in financial aid for its students. Generous gifts from its alumni — who know the value of their OWU education — allow the University to provide an average of more than $45,000 a year to students! And for students’ investment in an OWU education, they get small class sizes, professors who are exceptional teachers, experiential learning, internships, travel opportunities, a beautiful campus, and lots of activities. But, you know, every liberal arts school says they give all that to students. Those things are essential, but OWU won’t pretend that they make the University special. What’s Unique about OWU? Here’s what is different about Ohio Wesleyan: If you need a little help figuring out what you want to do with your life, and if you want to outpunch your weight class, Ohio Wesleyan University is the single best place for you to go to college in the United States of America. Students succeed at OWU. It provides the guidance, the attention, the support, and the community to help you discover yourself and get the experience to go where you want to be. • Creative Possibilities Become Reality at Cleveland Institute of Art

Cleveland Institute of Art has been a leader in creativity and innovation for more than a century. The latest example? CIA’s state-of-the-art Interactive Media Lab (IML) — one of only a few virtual production spaces of its kind in the country. Entertainment design is a growing field with innovative, high-paying jobs. The IML — coupled with CIA’s Virtual and Augmented Reality minor — is preparing students across every major for those jobs and giving them the skills to be pioneers in a rapidly expanding industry. Simply put, the hands-on experience they gain at CIA puts them at a huge advantage. What are virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR)? • VR immerses users in a completely digital world by creating computer-generated environments that are accessed through VR headsets. Think games like Beat Saber or other applications, such as training simulations for flying a plane. • AR is based on real-world images and content and superimposes digital images in the real world. Think apps that allow you to try on an outfit before you buy it or your favorite Snapchat filter. So, ask you rself: Are you a visual storyteller? Envision your stories unfolding in imaginary worlds using AR or VR. The IML features the same tech used to film The Mandalorian. Do you want to create video games? Picture yourself learning how to build the next hit video game hit and testing it in an in-house arcade with fellow gamers. Interested in design? Imagine slipping on a headset and designing products, automobiles or imaginary worlds in virtual reality. Are you a visual artist? Digitize your paintings, drawings, sculpture, ceramics or jewelry using high-tech equipment to more easily share and sell your work. All of this — and more — is possible at CIA’s IML, where students can push their imaginations further than they ever thought possible. What does a current CIA student say? Tim Wise is a third-year Animation student at CIA. He likes telling stories and showing emotion in ways words can’t perfectly describe, he says. When he graduates, he hopes to be a 3D animator for a large video game company or handling CGI assets for film crews. “The IML’s technology is relatively new, and as more studios begin to adopt it, it becomes increasingly important to know how to use it effectively,” he says. “Jobs will open up using that equipment and being able to navigate it effectively is extremely helpful toward getting a job.” Wise interned at the IML last summer. He gained firsthand knowledge of the creative tools available to him and other students. “Working at the IML was a once-in-a-lifetime experience!” he says. “I got to work with and learn about extremely high-end emerging technologies that show great potential for allowing students to produce high-end films for much less than it would cost normally.” How can you use CIA’s IML? What are some of those high-end technologies and spaces at the IML? Let’s explore: • The XR Studio features a 36-foot LED wall and inlaid LED floor that seamlessly integrate to help students build immersive visuals. It invites students to create Hollywood-caliber productions. “Imagine a movie studio, and you can bring in props or vehicles or whatever is in the content you want to create, but the studio has a digital backdrop and a digital floor,” explains Industrial Design faculty Jason Tilk. • The Arcade features two side-by-side 98-inch TV screens for shared gaming experiences using PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch consoles — perfect for community gaming experiences with classmates. “One of these rooms has a high-end VR headset called Varjo. It’s so crisp that it looks like you’re looking at the real world,” says Rachel Yurkovich, CIA’s associate director of technology. • The Digital Capture Studio is equipped with 3D scanners and photogrammetry gear that allow students to turn real-world objects — think paintings or other fine art — and people into digital models. • The Rapid Prototyping Lab includes 3D printers and laser cutters. Students can produce set designs for film productions, or if they design products, they can make physical models before moving to final production. • Equipment Checkout provides students with free access to high-end tech and equipment. In other words, all the tools needed to create something in the IML are at your fingertips. Are you ready to bring your creative visions to life and pursue an education — and career — in art and design? Schedule a visit to CIA and the IML at cia.edu/visit
